By day, I am an SRE team Lead Site Reliability Engineer at Forcepoint, a global cyber security company. By night, I monitor my home with Zabbix & Grafana and do some weird experiments with them. I'm blogging about the home project.
I am doing this for several reasons:
- I've been in IT monitoring for 20+ years and kind of seen it all, so monitoring the real world is a fun experiment for me
- Monitoring my home gives me piece of mind as if something goes wrong, I get alerts
- I'm passionate about monitoring and want to demonstrate to Zabbix community -- or to monitoring community as a whole -- that monitoring does not have to be so serious, and with little imagination you can monitor just about anything.
- This whole thing blew out of its proportions after Zabbix the company noticed my humble blog posts in Spring 2022, and in January 2023 I then opened this dedicated web page for the project to give you more details, easy access to my blog posts, ability to get more details than through LinkedIn posts and so forth.
Today, the blog goes far beyond just monitoring some IoT devices, I am monitoring everything from FlightGear flight simulator to a banana. The project is also in the middle of transformation from pure monitoring to actually controlling devices through Zabbix. In 2023, like everyone else, I started to play with LLMs, so Generative AI is also something I now do with GPT4All and Zabbix.
According to guessing lottery that is web analytics, as of September 2024 the blog has about 1500 unique monthly readers. No, not unique IPs, but readers. Take that with a grain of salt. I think in reality the statistics mean a poor little granny is searching for home decoration tips, somehow finds my blog and thinks that these are the weirdest home tips ever.
