Part 122: Zabbix 7.4.0rc1 is out, of course I upgraded to it

What's up, home? part 122 cover image

Zabbix 7.4.0rc1 came out and of course I upgraded my What's up, home? Zabbix version to it. Even though the changes in Zabbix 7.4 seem to be relatively minor, there's some very welcome changes and new features. Underneath, there's good stuff for bigger environments: ability to give bigger history cache, trend cache; database query optimizations; your usual set of bugfixes and performance improvements ...  but there's more than that.

Nested low-level discovery

Zabbix 7.4.0 will come with improved LLD, which now can do nested discovery. In other words, if there's something deeper to discover in something that was first discovered, it can then go on and discover those other details, too. I confess I don't yet have a clue how easy that is to use as I have not tried it yet, but I'm sure it will be extremely useful.

For example, Maikki the dog has her AI collar and now that I'm trying to monitor it with Zabbix, the very nested structure of its JSON might be a good test puppy for the new nested LLD.

Item card widget

Zabbix 7.2 brought us Host card widget which can show all kinds of details about your monitored host in a compact card widget. Now, with Zabbix 7.4, we will get an Item card widget, which like the name says, can show you details about any item. Here I can see in a glance details about my freezer temperature item.

But how do you configure what's shown on that Item card? Easy enough: In my test example, I chose these. You can drag and drop these details around and freely choose what to show.

Inline validation of forms

Some of the new features are something that many people have waited for long time, but hey, they are finally here! Perfect example of that is the configuration forms validation everywhere (EDIT: in following locations for now, a Zabbix employee corrected me: host, item, template, trigger forms).

Graphs palette feature

One of the small things that has been annoying in Zabbix until now, has been making the graphs colorful and easy to read. You know, it used to pick you some color shades that are very close to each other, which is ok if your graph does not have too many items in it, but starts to hurt your eyes and brain if there's many different items to track. A way around it used to be to use overrides:

... but of course this can be frustrating. Now finally, we have a new palette option! Thanks, Zabbix team, this is an amazing little help! I will go and make some of my dashboards way prettier now.

Dynamic widgets editor

Another one of "Hmm, I wonder why Zabbix didn't have this earlier?" minor details: editing widgets used to be clunky as in most cases, you had to apply the change to see how it looks like. Now, Zabbix allows you to edit your graphs and other widgets and you will see the changes you made immediately in real-time.

And more!

There's new templates, OAuth support for e-mail media type, maps improvements, and some other smaller UI fixes. I'm looking forward to official release of Zabbix 7.4.0!
